Hey everyone! I’m Sarah from East 9th Street Eats and am so excited to be guest posting on Ashley’s blog. Ashley knows how much I love to eat (that’s how we first met, grabbing “lunch” at the Iron Man 3 premiere) so it only makes sense that I share a food post. Today I’m showing you how to make a super simple recipe that not only tastes good, it’s also inexpensive to make and is much healthier for you than the bag of chips that’s probably in your pantry (OK, maybe it’s just my pantry). These homemade pita chips are a regular in my house and my 4-year old even likes them.
The key to this recipe is your spice mixture. You can pretty much mix whatever you like. I tend to like smokey flavors so I add cumin to my mixture and even though I shouldn’t, I add a bit of salt. Play with it. If you’re a fan of garlic and onion, add more of those flavors. If you kids won’t eat anything green, don’t add the rosemary. The choice really is yours. I don’t think I’ve ever made the same spice mixture twice.
After you’ve figured out your spice mixture, you’re ready to prepare your pita bread. I usually get the whole wheat pitas from Trader Joe’s since they are very reasonably priced. Once you’ve set your pita bread on your baking sheet, you spray it with non-stick cooking spray (or you could lightly brush with olive oil) and then sprinkle your spice mixture on top and spray again with your cooking spray. After you bake it in the oven for 15-20 minutes, you just slice them up and serve! It’s really that simple.
I like to serve my pita chips with hummus (Trader Joe’s has an AWESOME Mediterranean hummus) and even my Mexicorn dip. What I also like about this recipe is I can make as many as I need. Which, for me, usually means another trip back to Trader Joe’s to pick up more pita bread. 🙂
