Homemade Carpet Cleaner Powder

Homemade Carpet Cleaner PowderI love the smell of a freshly, cleaned house. I will have to admit that I keep Glade in business. So the other day I thought why not try to make my own carpet cleaning powder. Even couponing, I can usually get Glade for about $1 a bottle, but then there is the problem with all the extra packaging that comes from continually buying new bottles. Making my own, I can keep reusing the same bottle over and over again. Plus, I can customize the fragrance that I want to use. Plus, it’s all natural as well so I don’t have to worry about what chemicals I am putting in my house. Make your own homemade cleaner and you want ever want to buy it again. Trust me! Here’s how to get it done!

Homemade Carpet Cleaner Powder

It’s super easy and inexpensive to make your own homemade carpet cleaner powder. Here is a list of things you need

1 box baking soda

Essential oil, make sure it is 100% pure essential oil (fragrance I used is Lavender)

Parmesan cheese container (if you don’t have one, buy one and then put the cheese in a Ziploc bag)

That’s really all you need! Now here’s how to make your great personalized carpet cleaning powder

  • Empty a Parmesan cheese container. Clean and DRY it (make sure NO moisture is left in the jar)
  • Fill it half full with baking soda
  • Add five drops of your favorite essential oil, then give the powder a shake
  • Fill the container the rest of the way up with baking soda
  • Add five more drops of essential oil and then shake the container again

Wala! Your carpet cleaner is ready to use! Baking soda is an amazing product. It helps evaporate all sorts of odors. Plus, the fragrance from the essential oil will leave a wonderfully calming fragrance throughout your home that is chemical free!

Once your carpet powder is done, just gently shake a thin layer on your carpet. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, then vacuum up. If you are worry about stains, test on a small spot first then remove.

My final cost for the whole project (not including initial buying costs)

Baking Powder 75 cents

10 drops of essential oil 10 cents

Final cost: 85 cents a canister versus the $3 you would pay at a store plus you are putting less waste in the landfills. So it’s GREEN and it’s frugal!

This is a good start for a carpet freshener. I would add corn starch in equal amounts to the baking soda. Corn starch is more absorbent and will soak up any greasy or soapy residue on your carpet. if you have a spill on your carpet first cover it with salt and let it set to soak up and dry out the moisture. Vacuum that up then use the baking soda cornstarch mixture. Also check to make sure your vacuum cleaner can handle fine powders some with hepa filters will become clogged and can overheat the motor when you vacuum fine powders.
