The snow is melting, the birds are returning, and that means allergy season is upon us. We are a household of allergy sufferers in the Crunchy household, and that means that we have to be ready before the pollen descends upon us.
Our youngest daughter, Bayla, has had really severe seasonal allergies since birth. As soon as the temperatures even begin to rise, we know that we have to prepare to help get her through the start of allergy season. Lucky for you, we have 11 years of experience combating allergy season and wanted to share our allergy season tips so you can avoid those itchy, watery eyes and sniffles as much as you can!
15 Tips to Survive Allergy Season
Keep the Windows Closed: No matter how tempting it is to open the windows and get some fresh air, don’t do it. That just lets those pesky pollens in your house.
Take Your Shoes Off: Take your shoes off as soon as you come in the house. This will help you keep as much of the outdoor allergens outside of the home as possible.
Saline Rinses Are Your Friend: Using saline nasal rinses, or netipots, to help flush your nose of allergens can be a big help. It’s not the most fun experience, but it does work.
Have an allergy “emergency” kit : Have a kit set aside for those days that your allergies do act up. Grab some tissues, like Angel Soft’s blank tissues, that are soft and won’t irritate your nose. Plus, include great things like blankets and a comfy stuffed animal to make you feel better (I still have a stuffy, don’t judge) See how you can make a cute stuffy that holds your tissues here:
Lavender Works Wonders: Dab a dot of lavender essential oil under each nostril each morning. This is a little homeopathic trick that has helped keep allergens out of our noses.
Change your home air filters often during allergy season: Change your air filters at least monthly during allergy season, and make sure that the filter is a hypoallergenic one.
Keep an Eye on Pollen Counts: Make sure you check pollen counts every day during allergy season. This will help you plan your days better and try to stay away from high pollen count days. Websites like weather.com usually keep great pollen counts on their sites.
Avoid Touching Your Face and Nose: When your face and eyes are itching, this can be really hard, but scratching itchy eyes only leads to more itchiness and more allergens in your eyes and nose. Try your best to keep your hands off.
Take Your Medications Regularly: Allergy season comes like clockwork every year. Weeks before the “season” begins make sure you are taking your medications regularly as prescribed by your doctor. Even though written for “as needed” could be taken to help prevent symptoms from being so severe. (of course do what you doctor tells you, there’s no MD behind my name)
Get Enough Rest: Being over tired is a sure way for your allergies to go into hyperdrive. Make sure you are getting at least eight hours of sleep every night.
Eat A Well Balanced Diet: Eating well helps keep your body healthy, and will help it respond well to fight off all those nasty pollens. We always stock up on fruits and veggies to pump up our immune systems.
When You Feel Bad Listen To Your Body: If you are having a bad allergy flare, it’s really important to rest and listen to your body. We usually grab our allergy emergency kit, and watch movies all day until the sneezes go away.
Educate Your Friends and Family: Telling your friends and family about your allergies can be a great asset. Having them understand that this time of year might be tough for you, will help you feel like you have a great support system when you are feeling like the crud.
Find Indoor Hobbies: Rather than pouting that you can’t go out as much as you’d like, find some indoor hobbies that you love to do. This will help you look forward to your indoor time rather than loathing it. Bayla has learned to crochet and knit this year, so when the pollen counts are up she grabs her needles and creates!
When It’s All Over Get Outside: The surefire way to know you will survive is to head outside when the pollen counts go back down! That way you don’t feel like you are stuck inside all the time, and know when you do have to head indoors you will survive.
When allergy season hits, it’s important to follow these tips and have great products like Angel Soft Facial Tissue on hand. Their tissue with lotion is made from a great three layers covered lotion to soothe your nose and help you survive allergy season!
