This post is on behalf of Care.org
Because of our free education system here in the United States, we tend to take education for granted. Kids are pressured to conform and stressed to just pass the test so their schools can get more funding, but in the process we are killing their natural desire to learn. We have the privilege of complaining about body shaming in school dress codes, and how girls that go to school are facing more and more pressures every day, but one thing we don’t think about is that they get to go to school.
Girls in countries like Afghanistan don’t have the right to go to school. They have to fight for their lives and their right to education, and sometimes that fight is met with violence against them, their schools, and their teachers! Going to school can literally mean risking their lives. This is the fight that Laxmi has each and every day she goes to school. You can see more about her story here.
Care.org is an amazing organization that is trying to help overcome educational barriers to children across the world. You can learn more about the Care.org fight to get girls education here. If you’ve ever heard the story of Malala Yousafzai, you know the struggle for girls getting to school is very really. She is the gal that was shot by the Taliban just for speaking up about the need to educate girls. She has since become a world reknowned speaker on the issue, and she is merely 18 years old.
As much as I Â like to tout girl power, there are times like this one that we really need to put our money where our mouth is. Care.org is doing the leg work and doing programs that help girls around the world get access to education. It’s our job to listen to their stories and help out where we can. We take so much for granted in the United States, we need to use our privilege to help make the world a better place in ways that truly matter. (If you couldn’t tell, I am a little bit passionate about this cause)
My whole life, I’ve loved learning. I’ve yearned to learn new things, and during some of the hardest times in my life distracting myself with a new subject or a new skill has literally gotten me through some of the darkest times of my life. I really can’t imagine a world where I wouldn’t be allowed to learn because it was more important to marry me off or more important for me to do my womanly duties. A world that I am not allowed to think for myself would be horrible. Imagine turning to your daughter and telling her “Sorry, daughter. You can’t be anything you want to be!” That would be horrible, but that’s what these girls are hearing each and every day except for a select few, like Care.org, that are willing to fight the good fight on these girls’ behalf. It’s time to get angry, it’s time to get passionate and join that good fight, folks!
The Quirky Inspired community is amazing, and awesome, and powerful so let’s make a difference for the education of these girls!

This is a very important issue that I think a lot of people don’t know of. I make sure my girls know how women are treated elsewhere. Can you imagine having to get married at 12 or 14?
Amber Edwards says
I think I would be lost without the ability to learn and be educated! It truly is a blessing we often take for granted as women in the USA. What a great organization working to help women in other areas of the world.

Oh my gosh. I cannot imagine living a life like this… being told I cannot do whatever I put my mind to, or having to tell my daughters that. Makes me sick.

It’s a shame that women have been marginalized in so many cultures around the world! However, it seems like we’re making progress every day!

This is such an awesome program and I really hope that they get to help a lot of girls. Education is very important whether you are a boy or a girl.
Ashley Sears says
Yep, education is really important. Love how they are spreading awareness that girls are getting married off so young education is not a priority in some countries.
Krystal says
I am glad that you and Care.org are bringing awareness to this issue. Women everywhere should have the right to an education.
Ashley Sears says
It is really important! We take a lot for granted in life, but education shouldn’t be hard to get to.
