When I was a kid, I was obsessed with becoming an astronaut. Sure, you can say it’s because I was a child of the 80s, but it was really because I loved exploration. At first, I wanted to be an astronaut, then a paleontologist, then a geologist. The list kept changing, but the theme of science was all the same.
That’s why when we went to Google Headquarters a few months back I was really stoked to hear how Google and Shows like Miles from Tomorrowland were helping girls across the country get excited about STEM in a way they could relate.
One of my favorite parts of the chat was hearing them talk about #ilooklikeanengineer . Google is helping tear down walls and stereotypes about what STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) professionals look like. The #ilooklikeanengineer is built to raise awareness to let people that not just overweight white guys living in their mom’s basements are engineers. They come in all different shapes and sizes too, plus women rock the STEM world as well!
Whether you have daughters or sons, you should take all the time in the world to follow their passions especially if it is in STEM. STEM is what helps us creating more and more amazing inventions. Just think without STEM there would be no Internet. Wrap your head around that….No Internet, the horror!
When I was a kid there was a great obsession with space and things like space camp, but I wish there had been more ways to support girls in STEM. In most of my honors classes, I was surrounded by a bunch of guys. There weren’t a whole lot of female role models to look up to to show me that I could too be into science!
