I did receive an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles for the Miracles from Heaven press junket, but all Miracles from Heaven movie reviews are my own.
Don’t let the title Miracles from Heaven fool you. This movie isn’t just about having faith in God. It’s about having faith in something bigger than yourself even when you are at your deepest, darkest moments. It’s about having faith in your community, faith in your partner, and faith in your family too. And Miracles from Heaven gets two enthusiastic Quirky Inspired thumbs up!
As a mom to a chronically ill child, I am all to familiar with the struggles that go with being an advocate for your child. That’s why when Sony Pictures invited me to Los Angeles for the Miracles from Heaven press junket I was all to excited to get involved.
Miracles from Heaven is about an 11 year old girl and her family”s struggle when she is diagnosed with a chronic, potentially life threatening illness. Her family struggles to be an advocate for her and find answers as to why they are watching their little girl waste away before their eyes.
The Beams are a Christian family that finds deep comfort in their faith, but Christy Beam finds her faith rocked when no one can seemingly find an answer to help her daughter, Anna.
The film is based on true events, and upon the book, Miracles from Heaven by Christy Beam.
When my daughter Bayla was sick for four years, our family began to lose faith too. Doctor after doctor had different opinions about what was going on with our daughter. She endured test after test and treatment after treatment and no one could tell us why she was getting sicker and sicker. We even moved to Minnesota to go to Mayo Clinic to see if the top hospital in the country could help us figure out why our little girl was becoming more and more allergic to everything in the world.
We had hoped that seeing top doctors would lead to answers, but all we ended up finding were excessive hospital stays and doctors with God complexes that didn’t trust my instincts that something much bigger was wrong with my daughter. Towards the end of our stays with Mayo Clinic doctors were becoming adversarial and my daughter wasn’t getting any healthier.
There’s a critical scene in the movie where Christy Beam refuses to leave the hospital after a doctor tells her Anna has acid reflux and can go home. He egotistically says “I’m the doctor!” as that is the know all be all in regards to knowing what is wrong with Anna. Christy screams that she is not leaving until they tell her what is wrong. At that moment, I started bawling. To have a sick child, and to know the people that are supposed to be your allies in caring for your children are more concerned about their ego than about your instinct as a mother is heart wrenching. It makes you furious. It makes you terrified, and most of all it makes you feel helpless.
The Beam family’s story is truly inspirational. It’s also very realistic about the struggles a family has when a child has a complicated illness and no one is listening. The faith and power of a parent’s determiniation is truly inspiring, and anyone that has ever worried about their children should see this movie.
This movie isn’t just about the Christian faith. It shows you about the human condition, a parent’s struggle to protect their child, and a family’s determination to make the best out of an awful situation. Even though I am not a Christian, I loved this movie. It reached places of my heart that I thought had healed from my old child’s chronic illness, but it showed me that once you’ve been through a struggle like that you will always remember what it’s like to wonder if you are going to lose your child.
Our family had a happy ending when it came to finding answers for our daughter, and through a miracle from heaven the Beam family has one too. This is a great, family friendly movie and if you are looking for something to inspire you to carry on no matter how much you want to lose faith, I highly recommend this movie!
