Disclosure: I did receive free Amaluna Cirque du Soleil tickets to facilitate this review, but you guys know I can’t be bought
Amaluna is the latest production from Cirque du Soleil. This was my family’s first time attending a Cirque Du Soleil show, and to be candid I was a bit leary if the show was worth all of the hype. Amaluna is touring the United States right now, and we had an opportunity to attend the show right here in Minneapolis.
For those of you that haven’t been to a Cirque du Soleil traveling show, they ride into town with 62 trailers and set up on location in 8 days. Their stops can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, but one thing you must know is that you MUST see it when it comes to a town near you.
As soon as you enter the classic yellow and blue Cirque du Soleil big top, you feel like you are being transported into another world. Though huge from the outside the big top has a very intimate feel. There’s not a bad seat in the house.
As the show begins to come to life, the creatures that live on the enchanted island, where Amaluna is set, start to wander the audience. It’s fun, it’s interactive, and most of all it’s engaging. The show slowly starts to come to life as show time draws near.
One things that is unique about Amaluna is that the cast is over 75% women. Most Cirque du Soleil shows are predominately men, but not this time. Amaluna celebrates the coming of age of the daughter of the Goddess Prospera. It celebrates femininity, growth, love, and most of all women.
Even the amazing soundtrack, that is played live during the show, is performed by an all women band, and man can those girls rock! (Think Transiberian Orchestra with a female vibe)
The set is amazing. The costumes are surreal, and the acts are breathtaking. I can definitely see why everyone gets so excited when they hear that Cirque du Soleil has put together another show.
The only part that my family wasn’t too fond of was the segways between acts. There were some slightly comedic characters to entertain the audience while sets were changed, but at times they seemed to lose the momentum that the acts had built up.
You guys know how frugal I am, and for the price of the ticket I would expect something spectacular. Whole heartedly, without a doubt, Cirque du Soleil is worth every penny spent on their tickets. We loved it so much that I am seriously thinking about seeing one of their shows in Las Vegas. They are that amazing.
After the show we had the opportunity to speak to two of the cast members. They gave a fantastic insight into the months of training and developing a new Cirque du Soleil show.
One thing that was pretty evident, is their passion for the circus. Raph, a French native, attended circus school and began touring at the tender age of 15. Summer, a Florida gal, began as gymnast at LSU and auditioned for Cirque du Soleil right after college. She was quickly picked to help create the Amaluna show. Both were new to the Cirque du Soleil Family, but already have fallen in love with the cast and crew.
When asked what advice they would give others wanting to join Cirque du Soleil, they both gave the same advice. Raphael urges youngsters to “focus on passion.” Passion was the first ingredient for a Cirque performer. That and a lot of persistence and practice.
You can really tell from the top of that big top down to the audience’s seats that passion exudes the Cirque du Soleil. Passion and creativity flow freely and come together to create an amazing show that might quite literally change your life.
If you are interested in attending one of the Amaluna shows, you can purchase your tickets on the Amaluna website. There are also tons of great videos pictures so you can learn even more about the show. The show is in Minneapolis until October 20th!

We saw the Christmas show two years ago and my daughter just glowed. I can’t wait to see the loss on my kids faces this year.
