You guys know how much I love wine, and this crockpot mulled wine recipe has extended my love of wine to red wines too.

Crockpot Mulled Wine Perfect for Rockin’ Holiday Parties
There is something about the holidays that makes certain images dance through your head. You hear about wassaling and mulling things and egg nogs and tons of delectable treats.
There’s just something about warm adult beverages, spices, and delicious food aromas that make you all warm and fuzzy inside.
Honestly, I am not the most adventurous eater. (Random admission I know) When I went to a holiday party, and someone put a glass of red mulled wine in my face I’ll admit I turned my nose up at it. Ewwwww. Red wine…..
After suspiciously looking at the glass in my hand, my nose started catch whiffs of this amazing aroma. It was warm, spicy, and slightly sweet.
The sweet, spicy smell of the crockpot mulled wine kept teasing my nostrils, and I finally gave in! What could it hurt, right?
Man, oh, man was I in for a surprise! This was actually the MOST delicious red wine I have ever had!
This mulled wine was warm and the mulling spices just seemed to dance across your tongue.
It was a perfect way to just relax and sip your favorite red wine, and enjoy the company of friends and family.
What’s mulled wine, and WTH would you use a crockpot?
Before I looked into how to mull wine, I had absolutely NO idea what the heck mulled wine mean. (Come on, tell me I’m not alone on this one)
It was right up there with wassailing, WTH is a wassail or wassailing? It always sounded like some kind of elfish street fight to me or something.
Turns out wassail, and mulled wine, aren’t anything to do with elves with attitudes, but the spices you using IN the wine.
Have no clue what I’m talking about? Then make sure to check out how to make mulled wine (there’s step by step detail tips and hacks!)
What’s In Mulling Spices
- cinnamon
- cloves
- star anise
- oranges
- sugar
- other alcohols (if one kind of alcohol, two is always better, right?)
Making mulled wine is kind of like making pickles. It’s all about the spices, baby.
Spice, spice baby…..do.do.do.dododo.
You could also cheat and buy mulling spices for wine too. We won’t judge ;).
There are so many mulling spice combinations to play with, and they are all such great spices to bring out the fruity notes of a Pinot Noir.
You can add a dash of star anise with a heavy whopping hand of cinnamon sticks. If you really want to jazz it up you can add citrus fun by slicing mandarins and putting it in to mull.
What’s a Good Wine for Mulled Wine?
Mulling spices are magical, but this recipe all starts with a good red wine.
For this yummy drink, I used a good Pinot Noir. It’s a great wine full with flavor that really played well off the mulling spices.
It’s also a little sentimental for me because I used to live in this area of California, so it’s like drinking a little bit of my past in the bottle. Plus, the hints of blackberry, bing cherry, and strawberries in the wine make this mulled wine recipe perfection!

Magical Tools and Tips for the Perfect Mulled Wine Recipe
The only other thing that makes this recipe so much fun is that it’s in a crockpot. Dump all the ingredients in, stir, stir and let it work it’s magic.
My favorite crockpot for this recipe is a 6 quart crock pot. It’s nothing fancy, but it allows me to keep the wine warm the entire time of the party.
A simple 6 quart crockpot with three functions works just perfectly to meld the mulling spices into the wine, and keep it at a consistent temperature so your guests can drink all night long.
This makes it perfect for serving at parties and keeping your yummy mulled wine recipe warm all night long. You can even add fun little garnishes to the side of the wine so your guests can add a little more festivities to their cup.
Another little secret is cheesecloth. (Yeah, I know I had no idea WTF cheesecloth was either for a while)
If you put all your mulling spices in cheesecloth, it makes it a LOT easier to just pull out the spices. There’s no need to strain your mulled wine or worrying about your guests chomping down on hard spices!
You can twist the cheese cloth and secure it with a rubber band or a small clip. Drop it in your crockpot with the wine, and let the magic happen!
