There’s just something about having citrus, cinnamon, and nutmeg in there air that reminds me of the holidays. Rather than buying potpourri this year, I decided to make some homemade stovetop potpourri to make my home smell absolutely wonderful this year. The great part about it is it’s better for your family (no yucky chemicals here) and it’s really frugal as well.
Growing up,my mom always used to have potpourri fragrances wafting through the house. Though I loved having the home smell amazing, it always used to give me headaches because of the heavy perfumes in the potpourri. Using natural ingredients, like Halo oranges, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves we can fragrance our home without the headaches that come with most commercial potpourris. Plus, once you are done all the ingredients are compostable.
This homemade stovetop potpourri is really easy to make. Here’s everything you are going to need to make it:
- A small pot
- About 2-3 cups of water
- 2 Halo oranges (sliced in 1-2 inch circles)
- 1/2-1 c of whole cloves
- 3-4 whole cinnamon sticks
- 3-4 whole nutmeg
On the stove top, place the pot and water and add the nutmeg. Turn on high and almost bring to a boil. Add the cinnamon and cloves, reduce heat to medium. Turn the pot on low and add the sliced oranges. Allow the potpourri to simmer throughout the day. (Make sure to keep an eye on the water level)
This potpourri also makes a great gift. Just take a pretty cellophane bag and add whole oranges and all the ingredients. Attach a pretty tag with the instructions, and you are all done. You can give it as a holiday gift or it even makes an amazing house warming gift.

I live in an apartment where there are certain “odors” that I have no control over. There is some type of apparent sewage problem that I have reported several times. They don’t like to come repair it, as its a cost to the apartments. However, they normally have to call out a drain expert who flushes the lines and usually finds things that have been flushed down toilets and put in garbage disposals that didn’t belong there…. (last time, they found trash bags, hot wheels, feminine products, the list goes on… many are items that people should be discarding of in the trash cans, recycle bins and dumpsters) I am always spraying air freshener or burning candles, but it gets expensive and, as you mentioned, may contain “yucky” chemicals. I am going to try this!! I have heard that citrus is a great odor eliminator and just the picture of this alone looks like it smells absolutely delicious!! I hope it helps the problem I’m having!!! 🙂

Monica, That problem sounds awful :(. the great thing about this potpourri is you can shut it off, and then turn it back on for almost a week. Just make sure to add more water if it’s getting low

I do not like commercial potpouris because they cause allergy symptoms and do cause headaches. I like this all natural homemade potpourri and I bet is smells amazing and gets out the odors that seem to linger in the winter. I will have to make this!

Julie, My daughter has VERY severe allergies and doesn’t react at all to this potpourri.
