I did receive an all expenses paid trip to the Inside Out Press Junket, but all happy dancing is my own.
The Inside Out Press Junket was a whirlwind experience. I’ve already told you guys just how much I love Inside Out! When I was invited on this trip they told me there was going to be a new short movie on the Inside Out DVD/Blu Ray called Riley’s First Date. We had a special chance to screen this new short film while we were there, and let me tell you it didn’t disappointed.
As if the special screening wasn’t cool enough, we also had a chance to interview Kyle McLaughlin and Kaitllyn Dias, the voices behind Riley’s Dad and Riley herself! Before we get to that awesomeness, let’s talk about Riley’s First Date!
First of all, it’s hilarious. If you’ve ever had a first date, which I assume most of you have had by now, it is nostalgic. It reminds you what it was like when you had your first date. Now as a parent it’s equally funny because it’s probably a lot like what my husband would do when our kids have their first dates. Riley’s First Date was a lot of fun because we got to see inside the heads of all the characters in the short; the prospective boyfriend, Riley’s Dad, Riley’s Mom, and of course Riley.
Disney always has a really funny way of spinning things that let adults relate to them too. Not to give too much away, but there is a rocking moment featuring AC/DC and that’s mighty fine by me!
Since we ordered Inside Out digital copy early, I had a chance to sit down with my teens and watch it with them. That was quite the treat. They loved it so much that we watched it two times in a row! (Psssstt You can learn about how to get your Inside Out DVD/Blu Ray here!)
We watched the Inside Out short film Riley’s First Date the first days we were there, and then the next day we got to interview the voice actors behind the characters of Riley’s Dad and Riley. I’ve been a fan of Kyle McLauglin for a while now, and if you watch Agents of Shield you are quite familiar with him as well. Kaitlyn Dias is a newcomer to the voice acting scene, but it was still interesting to hear what it was like to voice Riley during the four year process of making Inside Out.
It was a lot of fun to chat with Kyle McLaughlin, rumor has it that Riley’s Dad has been named one of Disney’s Hottest Dads (not sure the source on that poll, but I am sure the science is sound. LOL) When asked how he felt about that, Kyle smiled and shared,
I’ll reign for a couple more weeks and then someone, of course, will knock me off from first. That’s pretty good. It’s all about the mustache, I think. I mean when it comes down to it. I wish I could grow one.
Even though Kaitlyn was a newcomer, she did a fantastic job as the voice of Riley. Early in the interview we learned that she originally was just the scratch voice for Riley. A scratch voice is a voice actor they hire during the development process of Pixar movies. It’s much more cost effective to do that than to have the talent record for the whole development process. Kaitlyn did such a stellar job that they decided to cast her as Riley on the final film too! Go Kaitlyn!
One thing that was challenging for Kaitlyn is that she is now 16 years old. She worked on Inside Out for over four years, which meant that her voice was changing during the process. She shared with us a little bit what that was like,
I was 11 at the time and I’m just like I’m gonna be part of Disney film. At first I was like no one’s gonna see me, but still it’s gonna be cool. And then, and then when I got the news that I was gonna be on the full feature film, I was like whoaaaa.
Since it was over a long period of time for me, I was working on it for four years. Of course, my voice changed a little bit. Over time I had to actually make my voice a little bit higher to make it sound younger, ’cause I’m 16 now and Riley’s 11. It’s a bit of a time difference.
Not that you need another reason to want to buy the Inside Out DVD or Blu Ray, but Riley’s First Date is definitely another reason!! We could seriously watch it on loop it’s so fun to watch. Wait are you waiting for, you know you want to see it ;)!
Disney-Pixar’s INSIDE OUT will be available on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere October 13 and on DVD, Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray Combo Pack and On Demand on November 3.
