If you are looking for an inspirational movie this year that is also great for the whole family to see, I highly recommend Million Dollar Arm. The great part about this movie is that you don’t even have to like baseball to really enjoy this movie.
Million Dollar Arm is the true life story of JB Bernstein, a struggling sports agent. He’s looking at the destruction of his sports agency after he decides to go out on his own. A big client slips through his fingers, and he’s looking for ways to stay afloat.
After a late night of watching American Idol and flipping to channels of Cricket players, a light bulb comes on. Maybe he can find new baseball talent in India. It’s crazy right? If the idea works, it might just be enough to save his business and change some cricket players’ lives forever.
What JB Bernstein didn’t expect to encounter on his journey was that he wouldn’t just be saving his business, but he would an experience that would change his life forever. He finds the talent he is looking for in Rinku and Dinesh, two 18 year old Indian boys that have never left their villages before let alone their country. He also finds a renewed sense of what is truly important in life: people that love you.
When I first heard about Million Dollar Arm, I wasn’t sure if it was going to be a movie I would care to see, but then I recalled how much I enjoyed films like Remember the Titans and The Rookie. Disney does such an amazing job bringing home the message that life isn’t just about sports. It’s about learning to be passionate and learning to love.
Jon Hamm does an excellent job in the film playing JB Bernstein, and really brings home the transformation from quintessential bachelor to pseudo family man. His character’s life starts off looking to save his own hide to really caring about what happens to these two Indian boys that have trusted him enough to leave their entire worlds behind.
Suraj Sharma and Madhur Mittal do an amazing job bringing Rinku and Dinesh to life on the big screen. They have such an honest portrayal of what two kids really farm from home would be going through. It was easy to see just what kind of culture shock the two went through because of this amazing opportunity.
Million Dollar Arm is full of life, blazingly powerful portrayal of the Indian culture, and even might jerk a tear or two. I’ve already seen it twice, and plan on seeing it a third time with my entire family because it’s just that damned good.
If you are looking for a heart warming, family friendly movie this summer, I HIGHLY recommend taking the family to see Million Dollar Arm which hits theaters worldwide on 5/16/2014!
