When I was growing up, one of my favorite outdoor game ideas was croquet. No, I’m not some 18th century old dame, but for some reason, I always loved playing that game.

Badminton was a close second! (Ok, maybe I am an old 18th century woman reincarnated two hundred years later, but what can I say I’m a weirdo.) There’s something about playing these fun outside games that lifted my quirky spirit!

Now that the days are getting warmer, we’ve put together some of our favorite outdoor game ideas! This is a 100% Quirky Inspired approved list!

Easy Outdoor Game Ideas to Make Your Next Party ROCK!

Before we get to the backyard games, I have a dirty little secret to share with you. I hope you won’t find it too shocking.

Want to know what my favorite yard game is? Are you sure you are ready for this? Hold onto your skirts ladies.

Badminton! Yes, Badminton! Never took me to be a badminton nut did you? What can I say? I’m full of surprises!

When we lived in New Jersey, our school had after school intra murals. You could play things like flag football, field hockey, tennis, and badminton.

Being the dork that I am, I was geeking out that there was badminton intra murals! Sign me UP for that bad boy. Who doesn’t love badminton?

On the first day of the intra murals, I got my answer pretty quickly. With a big cheese eating smile on my face, I floated into the gym ready to see who my adversaries would be on the court.

Expecting to see a crowd of faces, my jaw dropped when I saw a tumbleweed roll across the gymnasium floor. No one was there! Not ONE single student. Not even the dorks from audio visual club.

NO ONE but me, well myself and the gym teacher. I was flabbergasted. I couldn’t be the ONLY kid in school that thought badminton was bad ass. Or could I?

Despite the startling lack of peer participation, I held my head high and I decided to play anyway. Two or three times a week my gym teacher and I would play after school. It’s one of my fondest memories of middle school.

She didn’t have to take the time to play with me. Instead she could’ve cancelled the class, but she didn’t. We played and man was competition fierce, but I loved every minute of it!

Yup, that’s why classics, like badminton, are still on my outdoor game ideas list. Some things are too much of a classic to overlook!

Outdoor Games for Adults

Bocce Ball: My kids actually got me into bocce ball. It’s a game with croquet sized balls, and you try to toss your ball closest to the marker. Whomever gets the closest wins! It’s a great backyard game because it packs up in a small case and it’s portable.

Badminton: You already know I love badminton! Any backyard game that let’s you say shuttlecock is pretty awesome!

Frisbee Tic Tac Toe: Using a big blanket marked with a tic-tac-toe board, you try to toss your frisbees on spaces. The first person to make a tic-tac-toe wins!

Yardzee: Think of this game as yahtzee for your yard. Using a 5-gallon bucket and some large wooden die, you can have a blast racking those points up!

Lawn Darts: Lawn darts are making a comeback now that they don’t have metal tips anymore. (Some people take all the fun out of life). This is another fun yard game because it’s portable. You can pack it up and literally play anywhere.

Ladder Toss Game: When we lived in Indiana, every one we knew had a ladder toss game. Basically you have a stand with three rungs on it. The object to the game is to toss your balls on a string and get them to hang on the highest rung. It’s a lot harder than it sounds. Trust me!

DIY Giant Yard Jenga: If you are handy, this giant yard jenga is great! Step by step instructions on how to make your very own backyard jenga game.

Cornhole: This was another game I had never heard of until I moved to Indiana. Cornhole is essential bean bag toss for adults. You could also say its like horseshoes, but with bean bags! It’s a lot of fun either way!

Outdoor Games for Kids

Plastic Pin Bowling: This is a fun yard game that reuses 2-liter soda bottles. Just fill the bottles enough that they will stand on their own. Then bowl them down!

Parachute Games: Remember the giant parachute that was used in gym class? Now you can play it as an adult. Seriously! Maybe I’m weird, but that was one of the best games to play in gym class! Heck yea, I’m gonna get my own parachute so I can play it as an adult!

Giant Yard Connect Four: Who says Connect Four is just for kids? This giant yard connect four makes you feel like you’re now part of “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!” (Yes, I know, I am TOTALLY dating myself)

Jumbo Yard Checkers: Checkers is a classic game! Now this is jumbo yard checkers extreme edition. Play it as a picnic game or a backyard game. Take it with you on a camping trip. It’s portable so you can have fun outdoor games where ever you are.

Big Foot Cardboard Feet Races: If this isn’t quirky, I don’t know what is! Cut out your own “big feet” feet. Strap them on your feet and race! First one to the finish line without going face down in the grass wins!

DIY Nerf Target: Nerf guns are da bomb! Now you can make your very own Nerf Target! And make sure you have a bad ass Nerf Gun to shoot them down!
