If you’ve been following my blog for any length of time, you would know that I received a fibromyalgia diagnosis almost four years ago. My days went from being a vibrant and healthy work from home mom, to a nightmare of doctor’s appointments, pain, and unending fatigue. Being a pet parent has been a really important part to my recovery!
During the last four years, I’ve found a lot of things that have helped me overcome my fibromyalgia symptoms. Since I’ve been so vocal about fibromyalgia awareness, I’ve shared what supplements I take, what activities and exercises I do, but I haven’t mentioned one really important piece; how being a pet parent has changed my life with fibromyalgia.
We had two dogs before I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and hubby was itching for a third dog. As much as I love fur babies, I really didn’t think we needed a third. On a distracted afternoon, thanks fibro brain fog, during a conversation with my husband I let it slip how adorable I think pug puppies are. (BIG mistake) Less than 24 hours later, he plopped his phone in front of me with an ad online showing me the most adorable pug puppy that I’ve ever seen!
It was love at first sight, and I have to say that Sapphire, our Pug, has really made such a huge difference in living my life with a chronic illness. She’s smart, loveable, and fun. When I have really bad days, and can hardly leave bed, she’s always by my side or sitting in my lap giving me kisses. Even when I feel like everything is too painful, or takes too much energy, she makes me smile.
Though at first I wasn’t thrilled with the hubby for “persuading” me to get a third dog, I have to say I’m forever grateful. Over the course of the last year, I’ve really turned a corner with my health and no doubt some of that credit goes to being a pet parent. She lifts my mood, which helps me realize that I am strong enough to live, despite my chronic illness.
She’s my fur baby for life, and that’s why our family makes sure that she gets food that is just as good as the food we eat. Recently we found out about an organic line of dog food, yup you read that right, USDA certified organic dog food. Tender & True uses USDA Organic Poultry and it’s antibiotic free as well. Our family really tries to buy sustainable products when we can, and now we are glad that we have found a dog food that allows us to live that way as well.
Sapphire is licking her chops to try the Tender & True Chicken and Liver dog food, and I’m sure our other fur babies, Happy and Karma, will be excited too! PLUS, I’m sure she’d be excited about the Tender & True Ocean Whitefish and Potato or the Chicken and Brown Rice flavor! (Pssst, for you cat owners they have White Fish and Potato for cats too!) When we take extra special care of our fur babies, they are able to be there for us when we need them the most, and I’ve seen first hand how being a pet parent can improve the life of someone living with chronic illness.
