I did receive an all expenses paid trip to The Good Dinosaur press trip, but all opinions are my own.
As if Pixar feature films aren’t awesome enough, it’s just as much fun to see what new short film will premiere before the movie. This Thanksgiving, November 25th, you can check out Sanjay’s Super Team; a new short film showing before The Good Dinosaur. When I was in San Francisco, we had a chance to meet the director and inspiration behind the new short film, Sanjay Patel.
In “Sanjay’s Super Team,” the new short film from Pixar Animation Studios, accomplished artist Sanjay Patel uses his own experience to tell the story of a young, first-generation Indian-American boy whose love for western pop culture comes into conflict with his father’s traditions. Sanjay is absorbed in the world of cartoons and comics, while his father tries to draw him into the traditions of his Hindu practice. Tedium and reluctance quickly turn into an awe-inspiring adventure as the boy embarks on a journey he never imagined, returning with a new perspective that they can both embrace.
Sanjay’s Super Team is more than just an awesome short film. It shows a really inspiring story inspired by the director’s life. For me, it really touched my heart to see an alternative religion brought to the big screen. Being a mom raising Pagan kids, I can really relate to not seeing a lot of movies showing your religion in a positive light. That’s why the heart warming story in Sanjay’s Super Team really touched me. It was great to see how two different generations of family could learn to speak to each other and come to find common ground.
One of my favorite parts of talking with Sanjay was hearing all the message that he wanted to show in Sanjay’s Super Team and also all the artistic details that went into the movie. If I can brow beat anything into you guys, it’s the fact that there are SO many details that go into all of Pixar movies, and how just the smallest changes can have such a HUGE impact on the final movie.
The scenes showing the Gods and Goddesses as super heroes was another favorite part of mine. Though I am not Hindu, I am familiar with a lot of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. It was really awesome to see them come to life. They even made sure to make their hand jestures accurate as well. With the bright lighting, they gave the Gods a transcendental feeling. It was really amazing.
Even if you aren’t into Hindu Gods like I am, I think you will like Sanjay’s Super Team as it’s about a father and a son learning to come together and communicate with each other. That’s something I think all parents can relate to. Sometimes it feels like we are speaking different languages than our children, and that’s something that has been going on for generations.
Make sure to check out Sanjay’s Super Team November 25th before The Good Dinosaur. Here’s a sneak peak of it!
