I did receive an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles to facilitate this review of Feast, but all opinions are my own
While in LA we had a chance to sit down with Academy Award Nominated short animation creator/producer Patrick Osborne. This fun short film is one of the great bonus features on the Big Hero 6 Blu Ray that was just recently released.
One thing that I learned about most Disney Animation, was just how much thought and creativity goes into making even these short films. Having been a viewer for so many years, I think most of us just take for granted movies when we see them. You watch it, nod your head, and think to yourself “eh that was cute.” When you have a chance to pick the brain of greatness, you really begin to realize it’s not just about being entertaining. Its about art and telling a story. Something Disney animation does all the time, and they do it well.
The idea for Feast came to Patrick after he took a YEAR filming his own meals. Every night he would take brief video showing what he was eating. Food is so central to our culture. We use it to cope, we use it to celebrate, and we use it to nourish ourselves and our families.
From there, the story for Feast began rolling. It was really amazing to hear how hands on Disney animators are. They worked with food artists to decide how to make the food just perfect. They had a play date with some dogs to watch the movements of the animals so they could animate their main character better.
It really all just blew my mind. There wasn’t only some research to be done, but the Feast animators also thought about the lighting. When the dog likes the food, the food is in the light and glorious. When the dog doesn’t like the food, it’s in the shadows and sad. There was so much great detail in this short little film that it took almost a full year to animate. Think about that. This movie is about 10 minutes tops, and it took several hundred animators and almost a year. Wow!
Feast is a super cute short feature so make sure that you check it out on the Big Hero 6 bonus features section. You have to get the DVD with the bonus features because it includes Feast and some other awesome behind the scenes Big Hero 6 fun!
