Having children myself that are right around 11 years old, it’s really hard to imagine kids that age on the silver screen. For up and coming actor, Ty Simpkins, it’s nothing new. He’s been working as an actor since he was 3 weeks old. (His first gig was actually scored when his mom was still PREGNANT with him). Ty plays Harley in the lastest Iron Man film, Iron Man 3.
During the Iron Man 3 premiere events, we had the great opportunity to sit down and find out a little bit more about Ty. It was a great experience and really gave us some insight about what it’s like to be a child actor in a major motion picture.

The first thing I noticed about Ty is how well spoken he was. For eleven years old, he handled himself very well in a group of 25 bloggers. He was adorable, engaging, and extremely intelligent. It was pretty obvious why Marvel/Disney thought he would be perfect for the role of Harley in the film.
Another thing that was also was that he is an absolute fan of the Marvel series of movies and Robert Downey, Jr. It was so great to hear about the passion this young actor has not only for acting, but for the film series he was taking apart of.
Robert Downey, Jr. is my favorite person ~Ty Simpkins
Ty About Robert Downey Jr.
Even though Ty has an obvious adoration for Robert Downey, Jr, he was still cool and collected the first time he met his idol. He shared the story behind meeting Robert for the first time. He was called to the studio to do a “chemistry reading”. When he walked into the studio and walked past everyone, there was this guy standing with hat and glasses. He walked straight passed him. Finally, he was introduced as Robert Downey, Jr. Any average kid would’ve been completely star struck and not sure what to say. Not Ty! When asked if he was nervous meeting his idol he shared, “[Robert] actually asked me that. And I said, no, I’m just really excited to meet [you].”
Ty About Life Between Takes
Life on set for child actors really isn’t too much different than most homeschooling kids. When he’s not acting, he was spending time with the studio teacher playing neat educational games on her iPad. His favorite? A game a lot of you might recall from your childhood, Oregon Trail, but according to Ty “they made a modified version. And that’s just really awesome.”
Ty About His Character, Harley
Harley, Ty’s charcter, is a child that Tony Stark comes upon after strangely landing in North Carolina after taking flight from California. Tony’s a mess and Harley, a sharp witted kid armed with a potato gun, isn’t quite sure about his new found friend. Instantly you can see this is going to be quite the battle of wills between the two.
Ty shared a bit about his character, and his favorite parts of the relationship between Tony and Harley. What is Ty’s favorite part about playing Harley? He states, “[He] gets to meet Tony Stark. [He’s] similar to Tony, because [Harley] is a genius in the movie. [Tony’s] a genius in the movie.” Trust me, when you put two geniuses in the room with both 11 year old egos, it makes for some interesting scenes on screen.
