Au gratin potatoes are one of the most delicious recipes! It’s easy and delicious and creamy, and it’s one of my favorite Thanksgiving side dishes. That’s why when I had a chance to review the Philips AirFryer, I knew that was what I was going to make in it. Au gratin potatoes in a fryer you say? Yep, this is so amazingly easy to do or you can do it the slow poke way in the oven as well. Trust me you are going to want to pin this recipe!
Being a girl from the south, I grew up loving fried foods: fried shrimp, fried potatoes, fried corn bread, fried hush puppies…. (ok you get it!) As I’ve grown up, my tastes have changed. That fried stuff is just too much for my tummy. That’s why when I was invited to take a look at the Philips Airfryer I thought I would give it a whirl.
The fryer itself is super simple to start using. All we had to do was remove it from the packaging. It also was a really nice size and fit easily on our counter. We have a regular fryer, because hubby still clings to those southern roots. I’ve learned to loathe that thing. Every time you move it there’s an oily mess everywhere, and it’s not easy to just store it, so we would end up throwing out the oil every time after using it which gets pretty costly.
The Philips AirFryer doesn’t use any oil in the machine itself! Just a few extra steps to prep your ingredients and then the hot air that circulates in there. There’s no messy oily residue left behind, and it just takes a wipe down once it’s cooled to clean it. Those two things alone were enough to have me fall in love with it.
We made two recipes in the fryer; onion rings and this au gratin potato recipe (psst which is included below). I’ll be blunt, I wasn’t quite sure how the onion rings would turn out. The whole thing about onion rings is they are fried in hot oil to get that crispy crunch we all love. Though I am happy to report they turned out pretty darn well in the fryer. They weren’t quite as crispy, but I really think it had more to do with our recipe than the fryer.
The parmesan garlic au gratin potatoes on the other hand were perfect. To make it fair I did a little experiment. One batch went into the AirFryer and the other batch went into the oven. It was really surprising to me how much faster the potatoes in the fryer cooked. Both were set at 390 degrees and timed for 15 minutes. The fryer batch was done and had a delicious crusting of the cheese. The oven only melted the cheese and the potatoes at the bottom were still raw.
Overall, I really like the AirFryer. I am actually going to make some of my Thanksgiving side dishes using it. It saves me time and mess which is a double win for me. You should definitely give this au gratin recipe a whirl too. It works for the fryer and conventional oven. It just takes longer in the oven.
